GOLDEN FRAMES IN THE CLOSET

(JEMARI YANG MENARI DI ATAS LUKA-LUKA)

Our Concern

In the midst of existing diversity, minority groups in Indonesia are still fighting for their rights. It becomes even more complicated when the life journey of this minority group ends. When they no longer have control over their bodies, how then will the social environment determine their identity. Are decisions that a person makes while alive will be respected when they die? Or are they forced to give up on social decisions, including their immediate family, to determine their identity afterlife?

Synopsis

A mortuary cosmetologist has to face a dilemma when she receives a call from a mother who had lost her child in an accident.  A film with no dialog.

OUR CAMPAIGN

Cinema Friendly For The Visually Impaired

Commemorating International Disability Day, 3 December 2020, Bekantan Pictures offers a new experience in enjoying movies by releasing an audio description (AD) version of Golden Frames in the Closet. This AD is made so that blind and low vision colleagues can enjoy movies in a way that is tailored to their needs. Watchful viewers can also enjoy this AD film using headphones or earphones, while closing their eyes to get a different viewing sensation.

In addition to the audio description, a discussion podcast entitled “Making Movies to Be Heard (Not Just Watching)” will be released. This discussion involved a number of blind people and representatives from the audio description creation team from Minikino and Teater Kalangan. The audio description is made using Bahasa Indonesia.

OUR CAMPAIGN

Make Up Donations

As a form of our support for the make-up workers who struggle regardless of their social and cultural backgrounds in carrying out their duties, we also hold a collection of unused makeup to be reused to make up the bodies. It turns out that unused or expired makeup can still be used to make up the body. This movement has been carried out by Gloria Elsa Hutasoit in the @maratonkebaikan program. More than 50kg of make-up collected in this activity we handed over to Gloria to then be distributed to make up bodies throughout the archipelago.

OUR CAMPAIGN

Academic Collaboration

This film was made possible by the collaboration of filmmakers who met in a higher education institution. Apart from being a film practitioner, these filmmakers have served other roles as lecturers, alumni and film students from a university. Because most of the core crew are filmmakers who also work as teachers, we also share our experiences in each class and a number of public lectures. Through this collaboration, it is hoped that we can continue to raise concerns as well as a means to unite individuals from different ethnic, religious, cultural, and age backgrounds in a film production. In terms of music for films, we also collaborate with Tashoora, a music group that has consistently fought for the injustices that have occurred.

NEWS & REVIEW

Short Film Review: Golden Frames in the Closet (2019)

Filmmaker Putri Sarah Amelia likes to toy with suspense, to sometimes confusing results but at least with an appeasing payoff at the end of it all. The air of suspense and curiosity in the film is heightened by scant use of dialogue, which of course is every filmmaker’s cardinal rule – if you get your message across without dialogue in a film, it is likely a good film.

Indonesian short films featured in New Zealand’s Show Me Shorts

Six Indonesian short films are being showcased in New Zealand’s international short film festival Show Me Shorts until Aug. 19.

The films are Svetlana Dea’s Jagawana (Rangers, 2015) Oktivani Anggia Rachmalita’s Llop Mougn (Wolf Mind, 2018), Putri Sarah Amelia’s Jemari yang Menari di atas Luka-luka (Golden Frames in the Closet, 2019), Nur “Wucha” Wulandari’s Muslimah (Muslim Women, 2018), Jason Kiantoro’s and Bryan Arfiandy’s Life of Death (2018) and M. Ramza Ardyputra’s Reform (2018).
